Japan’s Digital Nomad Visa: Requirements and Benef
Japan’s Digital Nomad Visa gives eligible international remote workers the opportunity to spend up to six months in Japan while continuing their work for overseas employers or clients. For those who want to experience everyday life in Japan without interrupting their careers, it offers a practical way to combine work and travel.
1 What Is Japan’s Digital Nomad Visa?
Commonly called the “Digital Nomad Visa,” this immigration category falls under the “Designated Activities” status of residence, Notification No. 53.
It allows eligible foreign nationals to work remotely from Japan using digital technology. Qualifying activities include working for an employer based overseas or providing online services to clients outside Japan.
This status does not permit employment with a Japanese company or other Japanese organization. The permitted stay is six months, and extensions are not available.
2 Main Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, applicants must meet the following key requirements:
・Length of stay: Your stay under this status must not exceed six months within a one-year period.
・Eligible nationality: You must hold nationality or citizenship from a country or region on the official eligibility list, which reflects Japan’s visa exemption arrangements and applicable tax conventions.
・Annual income: Your individual annual income must be at least JPY 10 million at the time of application.
・Private insurance: You must have insurance covering death, injury, and illness throughout your stay in Japan. Coverage for medical treatment arising from injury or illness must be at least JPY 10 million.
・Qualifying remote work: You must provide supporting documents showing that your work meets the requirements, such as evidence of overseas employment or qualifying business activities.
Check the official requirements and document checklist before preparing your application.
3 Can Your Family Join You?
Your dependent spouse and children may accompany you under a separate “Designated Activities” category, Notification No. 54.
Each accompanying family member must satisfy the applicable nationality and insurance requirements. The nationality eligibility list for family members differs from the list for digital nomad applicants, so eligibility should be checked individually.
4 Benefits of Spending Up to Six Months in Japan
The main benefit is the ability to continue qualifying overseas remote work while spending an extended period in Japan. The visa provides a dedicated immigration route for this purpose, with a permitted stay of up to six months.
A longer stay gives you time to settle into a daily routine, explore different regions, and experience local culture beyond a short holiday. If eligible family members join you, it can also be an opportunity to share the experience of living in Japan.
For professionals considering future connections with Japan, the stay may help them understand the local lifestyle and explore their longer-term interests. Any future employment or business activities would need to meet the requirements of the appropriate immigration status.
Before applying, review the latest official guidance to confirm your eligibility and the documents you will need.
