Can Specified Skilled Workers Change Jobs?
The Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa was created to allow foreign nationals to work in industries facing serious labor shortages in Japan.
Many foreign workers are employed under this system. Some may consider leaving their current job and moving to a different company.
So, is it possible for Specified Skilled Workers to change jobs?
1 Is It Possible to Change Jobs?
In general, it may be possible for Specified Skilled Workers to change jobs.
However, this is not completely unrestricted. Certain conditions and procedures need to be met.
The SSW visa allows you to work only in specific industry sectors. Therefore, your new job must meet the following conditions:
・The new job must be in the same SSW industry field (for example, caregiving to caregiving, food service to food service)
・The new employer must be properly registered as an accepting organization in the relevant field
・A support system for you after the job change must be in place
2 Basic Rules for Changing Jobs
When changing jobs, you should be aware of the following points:
・Changing to a different industry field is generally not allowed
If you wish to move to a different field, you may need to pass new skill and Japanese language tests and apply for a change of residence status again.
・If the new employer does not meet requirements such as legal compliance, working conditions, and support systems, the application may not be approved.
・It is important to avoid a long period without employment
3 Job Change Procedure
The general process for changing jobs is as follows:
⑴ Resign from your current job (or prepare to resign)
You may need to complete required notifications and procedures related to your resignation.
⑵ Find a new employer
Search for a new company and confirm working conditions and job details.
It may also be possible to receive job introductions through a registered support organization.
⑶ Sign a new employment contract and prepare a support plan
You will sign a contract with the new employer and arrange support such as daily life assistance and Japanese language learning.
⑷ Apply for a change of residence status
If you change your employer or relevant organization, you may need to apply for permission to change your SSW status.
⑸ Immigration review and approval
The review period is usually about 1–2 months. If approved, you may begin working at your new company.
