Caregiving
1 Working as a Foreign Professional in Japan’s Caregiving Sector

Japan’s rapidly aging population has created a strong and growing demand for caregivers. As a result, more foreign workers are entering the caregiving field each year, especially through the Technical Intern Training Program and the Specified Skilled Worker program.
Foreign caregivers now play an essential role in many care facilities across Japan.
Many foreign caregivers come from countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

2 Main Residence Statuses Available for Caregiving Work in Japan
⑴ Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services
This visa category is generally not intended for hands-on caregiving duties.
It is used for positions involving operational management, training programs for international staff, or planning and coordinating international caregiving initiatives.
If your goal is to work directly as a caregiver, this visa type is usually not applicable.
⑵ Technical Intern Training Program
The Technical Intern Training Program allows foreign nationals to come to Japan to learn caregiving skills that can later be applied in their home countries.
Under this program, you may engage in tasks such as:
・Assistance with daily living activities (eating, bathing, toileting)
・Support with housework and routine activities
・Helping elderly individuals with rehabilitation exercises
⑶ Specified Skilled Worker (Tokutei Ginō)
The Specified Skilled Worker (Caregiver) status is designed to address labor shortages in the caregiving field.
You may be eligible if you have completed the Technical Intern Training Program or if you pass the required examinations.
This status allows you to engage in a broad range of caregiving duties, including:
・Assistance with daily living activities
・Monitoring and supporting elderly individuals
・Performing general caregiving tasks as part of a team
3 Consult a Lawyer Experienced in Immigration Matters
If you wish to work in Japan’s caregiving industry, it is important to understand the visa options and legal requirements that apply to your situation.
Incorrect procedures can lead to serious problems, including visa denial or delays.
We recommend consulting a lawyer experienced in immigration law, who can assist you with the application process and ensure that your documents meet all legal standards.
