Intra-Company Transferee
1 What is the "Intra-company Transferee"?
The "Intra-company Transferee" status is designed to accommodate the international expansion of business activities by allowing companies to transfer specialized professionals from their overseas offices to their offices in Japan.
This visa applies, for example, to foreign nationals who are dispatched from an affiliated company overseas to a Japanese corporation, transferred from a foreign headquarters to a branch office in Japan, or sent to a newly established subsidiary or branch office in Japan from an overseas headquarters.
2 Benefits of the "Intra-company Transferee"
Using the Intra-company Transferee offers the following advantages:
⑴ Cost Reduction
Compared to hiring new local staff, transferring foreign workers from affiliated companies allows businesses to reduce personnel costs while ensuring that highly skilled workers are selected to engage in operations in Japan.
⑵ Workers Engaged in "Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services"
Roles Employees working in roles related to "Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services" must typically meet academic and practical experience requirements to work in Japan under this visa category.
However, under the Intra-company Transferee visa, companies can assign highly skilled foreign workers to their Japanese offices even if these workers do not meet the standard requirements required for the "Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services" visa.
This is a significant advantage of the Intra-company Transferee status.
3 Important Points Regarding Intra-Company Transferee Status
To obtain the "Intra-Company Transferee" status of residence in Japan, both the foreign worker and the sponsoring company must prepare various documents.
If these documents are not properly collected, or if it is not clearly demonstrated that the requirements for the Intra-Company Transferee status are met, the application process may face delays, or in some cases, the application may even be denied.
If the status is not granted, all the preparations could go to waste.
Furthermore, the company may suffer significant losses if the foreign worker may be unable to begin the duties they were planning to perform after obtaining the status of residence.
To ensure a smooth application process, we strongly recommend consulting with a lawyer who is well-versed in Japanese visa procedures.
